MUMBAI – Indian telecommunications operators net added 8.43 million mobile users in March, up from 6.40 million users added in February, according to data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Wednesday. Total mobile subscribers across India rose nearly 1% on month to 1.27 billion as of Mar. 31. Vodafone Idea net added 102,899 mobile users in March, marking the second consecutive month of net mobile subscriber additions after losing subscribers for nearly 5 years in a row.  

 

Bharti Airtel Ltd. took the top spot, adding 5.09 million mobile users in March, compared with 4.86 million in February. This was followed by Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd., which added 3.23 million users in March, nearly double the 1.62 million it added in February. State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. added 17,095 mobile users in March, compared with the 101,824 it lost in the trailing month. 

 

As of Mar. 31, Reliance Jio continued to have the highest mobile subscriber base with more than 496 million users, followed by Bharti Airtel with around 478 million users. Vodafone Idea had more than 198 million mobile subscribers and BSNL had nearly 93 million mobile users as of Mar. 31.

 

Private sector companies held 92.64% of the mobile user market in India at the end of March, slightly higher than in February. State-owned BSNL and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd. together held a 7.36% market share. Bharti Airtel's market share increased 15 basis points on month to 37.74%. Reliance Jio's share fell 1 bps on month to 39.21% and that of Vodafone Idea declined 10 bps to 15.68%.
