MUMBAI – Global production of primary aluminium was up over 10% on month at 6.30 million tonnes in March, according to data from the International Aluminium Institute. On a year-on-year basis, production was up nearly 1%. However, in countries under the Gulf Cooperation Council, production fell over 5% on year to 495,000 tonnes in March. The war in West Asia has led to production cuts by major smelters in the region, which accounts for around 9% of global aluminium output.
The Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global aluminium trade, has been closed since late February due to the West Asia war. "Disruptions at Emirates Global Aluminium's AlTaweelah smelter, reduced output at Alba, and earlier curtailments at Qatalum could remove nearly 3mtpa (3 million tonnes per annum) of capacity, almost half of Middle East production," analysts at ING said in a report. Emirates Global Aluminium halted operations at its Al Taweelah smelter after the site was hit by Iranian missiles and drones.
The average daily global aluminium production in March fell to 203,300 tonnes from 203,900 tonnes in February. In March, China's aluminium production rose nearly 11% on month to 3.80 million tonnes from 3.42 million tonnes recorded in the previous month, and was up nearly 2% on year, the data showed.
In Asia, excluding China, production rose to 421,000 tonnes in March from 379,000 tonnes recorded in the previous month. In Africa, aluminium output in March was 130,000 tonnes, up from 117,000 tonnes the previous month.
Production of primary aluminium in Europe, including Russia, rose to 622,000 tonnes in March from 559,000 tonnes the previous month. Output of metal in North America rose by 32,000 tonnes to 334,000 tonnes in March and production in South America rose 14,000 tonnes to 132,000 tonnes.
Global alumina production fell over 10% on month to 11.82 million tonnes in February, according to data from the International Aluminium Institute. At 2108 IST, the three-month aluminium futures contract on the London Metal Exchange was up 0.1% at $3,562.0 per tonne. End
