--Govt OKs export of additional 2.5 mln tn wheat, taking total to 5.0 mln tn
NEW DELHI – The government Monday approved an additional wheat export quota of 2.5 million tonnes to ensure better prices for farmers amid ample availability of the grain in domestic markets. With the additional export quota, a total of 5.0 million tonnes of wheat and 1.0 million tonnes of wheat products can be shipped out, according to a release from the consumer affairs ministry.
On Feb. 13, the government, after a four-year ban, permitted the export of 2.5 million tonnes wheat and 500,000 tonnes of wheat products, over and above the 500,000 tonnes quota announced on Jan. 16. Wheat products include refined flour or maida, semolina or sooji, and flour or atta. India had curbed wheat exports in May 2022.
The additional wheat export quota comes after the government in March estimated a record wheat production of 120.2 million tonnes for the 2025-26 crop year (Jul-Jun). "In view of the comfortable production outlook and higher stock availability, permitting additional exports was considered appropriate," the government said.
The government hopes higher exports will enhance market liquidity, facilitate efficient stock management, and prevent distress sales during the peak arrival season. End
