NEW DELHI - The Indian government is working to ensure the country gets preferential market access in the US under the Bilateral Trade Agreement, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said Monday. Both sides have almost finalised the trade agreement, Goyal said. "We are now just dotting the i's and crossing t's," Goyal told members of the press.
Goyal's comments come at a time when an Indian delegation led by India's chief negotiator Darpan Jain is in Washington to hold talks. The three-day talks end on Wednesday. This is the first meeting between officials from both sides since the US Supreme Court scrapped the reciprocal tariff imposed by US President Donald Trump. Before the US court ruling, New Delhi and Washington had concluded trade talks, under which the US had offered to lower the reciprocal tariff on India from 25% to 18%.
After the court verdit, the terms of that deal are likely to change now. The Trump administration currently imposes a blanket 10% tariffs on all trading partners.
Meanwhile, the office of the US Trade Representative has initiated unfair trade practice investigations against India along with several other nations. New Delhi has already shared its response on the investigations with the US government. Some discussions related to the investigations may feature in the trade talks. End
