India summer crop area at 6.9 million hectares as of Fri, up 4.4% on yr

--India summer oilseeds acreage 914,000 ha as of Fri vs 765,000 ha year ago 


NEW DELHI – The area under summer crops across India rose 4.4% on year to 6.91 million hectares as of Friday, driven by higher acreage of pulses and coarse cereals, data from the agriculture ministry showed. However, the area under rice, the largest summer crop, remained down 7.6% on year at 3.01 million hectares, unchanged from Apr. 10.

 

The normal acreage during the summer crop season is 7.54 million hectares, as per the average of the area covered in the last two years. Summer crops are cultivated in India between the rabi and kharif seasons, typically from March to June.

 

Apart from rice, all other summer crops registered an on-year rise in acreage. As of Friday, the area under pulses was up nearly 15% on year at 1.55 million hectares. The acreage of moong, the legume planted the most in the summer season, rose about 10% to 1.07 million hectares. The acreage under urad was up 32% at 345,000 hectares.

 

As of Friday, the acreage under maize was 846,000 hectares, up about 8% from the corresponding period last year. Other coarse cereals include jowar, bajra, ragi, and small millets.

 

The total area under oilseeds rose 19.5% on year to 914,000 hectares as of Friday, the data showed. The area under groundnut was up over 31% on year at 551,000 hectares, and that under sesame was up 5% at 318,000 hectares.  End
