--Govt OKs INR 98.89-bln outlay for 3rd, 4th Rajahmundry-Vizag railway lines

NEW DELHI – The Union Cabinet Saturday approved an outlay of INR 98.89 billion to add the third and fourth railway lines connecting Rajahmundry and Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh to ease congestion and boost logistics. The project has been approved for a duration of five years.

The 198-kilometre project from Nidadavolu to Duvvada is part of quadrupling the Howrah-Chennai High Density Network route, where line capacity has already reached up to 130%, leading to frequent congestion and operational delays, the Cabinet said in a release.

The project section includes the construction of a 4.3 km rail bridge over the Godavari river, a 2.67 km viaduct, and three bypasses. The new alignment will also be 8 km shorter than the existing route, improving operational efficiency.

The project route will connect major ports along the east coast such as Kakinada, Machilipatnam, and Gangavaram, covering one of the busiest and predominantly freight-oriented sections of the East Coast Rail Corridor.

The line expansion is expected to generate about 13.5 million days of employment and reduce logistics costs by an estimated INR 11.51 billion annually compared to road transport. Further, the project is expected to reduce carbon emissions by about 5.15 billion kilograms, equivalent to planting over 20.6 million trees.  End
