MUMBAI – Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. has stopped production of its premium hatchback crossover Ignis and has asked dealers across the country to promote the sales of Baleno and Fronx instead, as demand for the model has steadily declined in recent years, major dealers of the company told Informist.
"Maruti Suzuki has stopped the production of the Ignis. We are only selling existing stock of the car for the last 1-2 months, and those too are very scarcely available," a major Nexa dealer in Mumbai said on condition of anonymity. "We have barely got any shipments of Ignis in the last three months. The company told us a month back not to expect any more Ignis shipments," the dealer said.
Maruti Suzuki sold the Ignis exclusively through its Nexa dealership network, which caters to 'premium' buyers, as opposed to the Arena network that targets budget-conscious consumers. The Nexa portfolio includes the Baleno, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Jimny, e Vitara, XL6, and Invicto.
Dealers said there has been very limited "excitement" about Ignis ever since its launch. The Ignis was first launched in January 2017 at an ex-showroom price of INR 459,000 and was only the third Nexa product after the Baleno and the S-Cross, which was discontinued in October 2022.
"We had to offer discounts of up to INR 60,000-INR 70,000 to clear Ignis stock," a Maruti Suzuki dealer based in Tamil Nadu said. "For every 10-20 Fronx and Baleno model we sold, there would hardly be one booking for the Ignis," the dealer said.
Maruti Suzuki sold roughly 2,300-2,400 units of Ignis per month in 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), down from 2,700 units a month in FY24 and around 6,000 units in FY22, data showed. In contrast, the company has been selling around 14,000 units per month each of Fronx and Baleno in both FY25 and FY26.
"We have been asked not to make commitments for vehicles which are not in supply, which happens to be Ignis," another major Nexa dealer said. In Tamil Nadu, the Baleno is the most 'sought-after' model in the hatchback segment.
"Maruti Suzuki will not face any pinch because of Ignis sales halt," said Ravi Gupta, equity research associate at InCred Capital. "Stopping the manufacturing of this car will make space for other models," Gupta said.
Maruti Suzuki has been struggling to keep up with the surge in car demand following the cut in goods and services tax in September. The company's management has since said that it is calibrating production across models to manage the waiting period for high-demand models.
Its existing capacity of 2.4 million units per annum across plants in Gurugram, Manesar, Kharkhoda, and Hansalpur is currently fully utilised. Maruti Suzuki's board last month approved an investment of INR 101.89 billion to set up a new manufacturing facility in Gujarat.
Queries sent to Maruti Suzuki regarding the halt in Ignis production remained unanswered.
Thursday, Maruti Suzuki's shares closed 0.4% higher at INR 13,335 on the National Stock Exchange. End
