MUMBAI – Temperatures in the interior parts of Maharashtra, such as Vidarbha, Marathwada, and central Maharashtra, have soared over 40 degrees Celsius in the past few days, with the city of Akola in Vidarbha recording the highest temperature of the season so far at 44 degrees Celsius Wednesday, private weather forecasting agency Skymet said. However, thunderstorms from Sunday to Wednesday will likely bring relief to these regions next week, it said.
An anti-cyclone over Maharashtra and Karnataka is exerting pressure on the air over the interior parts of Maharashtra, and the downward motion is raising the low-level temperatures, the weather agency said. This weather system is likely to keep influencing temperatures over the region till Saturday, and get displaced by other weather systems on Sunday, the agency said.
A cyclonic circulation is likely to form over southeast Pakistan and adjoining Gujarat over the weekend, which will change the wind pattern over the western parts of Maharashtra. The seasonal trough will become active and run from Vidarbha to the interiors of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka from Sunday to Wednesday. The east to west oscillation of this trough will shift weather activities along the coastline from Konkan to Kerala.
The accumulated heat and presence of the above-mentioned weather systems is expected to trigger thunderstorms over Vidarbha, Marathwada, and central Maharashtra from Sunday to Wednesday. Rain and thundershowers accompanied by strong winds are likely over the state during this period, providing temporary relief from hot weather. The remnant effects of these weather systems may continue over some parts of the state on Thursday and Friday, the weather agency said. End
