India records 46% below-normal rainfall in week to Wed at 4.5 mm, says IMD

MUMBAI – India received an average rainfall of 4.5 millimetres in the week ended Wednesday, 46% below the normal of 8.3 millimetres for the period, according to the India Meteorological Department. During Mar. 1–Apr. 15, the country received 54.1 millimetres of rainfall, which is 14% above the normal of 47.3 millimetres.
All four homogeneous regions of the country recorded below normal showers during the week. Rainfall in south peninsula India was 80% below normal at 1.6 millimetres, while in central India it was 47% below normal at 1.0 millimetres, data from the weather department said. In east and northeast India and northwest India, precipitation was 39% below normal at 15.1 millimetres and 4.6 millimetres, respectively.
Of the 36 subdivisions, five subdivisions received 'large excess' rainfall, while one received 'excess' rainfall. Two subdivisions recorded 'normal' showers, six received 'deficient' showers, and 16 subdivisions saw 'large deficient' rainfall. Six subdivisions did not record any rainfall during the week. End
