NEW DELHI – The Delhi High Court Wednesday agreed to protect RPSG Ventures Ltd. Chairman Sanjiv Goenka's personality rights and pass orders directing Google LLC, Meta Platforms Inc., and others to remove his deepfakes from the internet as he faced trolling for his team's loss in the Indian Premier League matches.

The high court said if an entity replaces someone's face in images or videos and uses expletives against him then it has a negative impact on the individual's personality.

Goenka moved the court against circulation of his deepfakes by various entities, trolling him for his team Lucknow Super Giants' losses in the ongoing Indian Premier League. He said there were abusive social media posts and use of morphed images that had vulgar content circulating on the internet over his team's losses.

Goenka said his face was morphed on the body of a dog and a character of a television serial who was a fool. A video shows him assaulting cricketer Rishabh Pant, his team's captain, said Goenka. He said he was a leading industrialist in the country and the deepfakes were not humour and parody.

Last month, Goenka said he was made a punching bag on social media following his team's struggles in the Indian Premier League. In 2024, Goenka's media image took a big hit when his heated discussion with his team's former captain K.L. Rahul after a loss went viral on social media.

Former Indian Premier League chairman Lalit Modi this year also pulled up Goenka over his tense chat with Pant. Modi said Goenka was a complete loser and joker of the highest order and he was embarrassed with the petitioner's behaviour. Modi said that if he was the chairman of the Indian Premier League, he would have banned Goenka and made him forfeit his ownership of the Lucknow Super Giants team.

Goenka is the chairman of the RPSG Group, a Kolkata-based conglomerate with interests in power, retail, fast-moving consumer goods, and media. He owns the Indian Premier League cricket team Lucknow Super Giants and Indian Super League side Mohun Bagan.

At 1228 IST, shares of RPSG Ventures were down 0.5% at INR 971.60 on the National Stock Exchange.  End
