MUMBAI - A strong performance by the two-wheeler and passenger vehicle segments in March helped the Indian automobile industry close 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) on a robust footing, data from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers showed Tuesday. Wholesale sales of automobiles in March rose 18% on year to 2.97 million units, while for FY26, sales were up nearly 13% at 34.91 million units.
Wholesale sales of two-wheelers in India climbed 19% on year to 1.98 million units in March. Growth in scooter sales outpaced that of motorcycles in the final month of FY26. Companies sold 761,422 scooters in March, up almost 30% on year, and 1.17 million motorcycles, up nearly 13% on year.
Exports of two-wheelers in March rose almost 18% on year to 428,622 units. The segment's production grew 22% on year to 2.40 million units.
In March, despatches of passenger vehicles in India rose 16% on year to 442,460 units, while exports grew only 2% on year to 78,922 units - flagging stable demand back home amid supply chain disruption overseas due to the ongoing West Asia war. Production of passenger vehicles grew 9% on year to 461,099 units.
Three-wheeler domestic wholesale sales grew 21% on year to 76,273 units in March. Growth continued to be led by passenger carriers, the biggest sub-segment.
Companies despatched 61,264 passenger carriers in India in March, up 23% on year, and 13,367 goods carriers, up 15%. It was a mixed bag for electric three-wheelers in March as sales of electric rickshaws fell 9% on year to 972 units, while despatches of electric carts zoomed 73% to 670 units.
Q4 & FY26
Companies sold 9.40 million automobiles in the March quarter, up 23% on year. Of this, domestic sales grew 24% on year to 7.64 million units, while exports rose 23% to 1.75 million units.
In FY26, companies sold 28.27 million automobiles in India, up 10% on year, and exported 6.65 million vehicles, up 24% on year. Automobile companies gained sharply from the cut in Goods and Services Tax effective from Sept. 22. Apr-Sept of FY26 remained soft in terms of offtake, with growth picking up sharply only in the second half of the financial year.
In the March quarter, two-wheeler sales in India hit a record high of 5.77 million units, up 26% on year, while their exports grew 21% on year to 1.38 million units. Companies amped up the production of two-wheelers amid this strong demand as output rose 21% on year to 7.06 million units in the March quarter. "While growth has been observed across both urban and rural markets, the current trend has been led primarily by urban demand," SIAM said in a press release.
Domestic two-wheeler sales in FY26 rose to a record high of 21.71 million units, up almost 11% on year, crossing the previous peak attained in FY19. "The implementation of GST 2.0 has spurred growth in both Q3 (Oct-Dec) and Q4 (Jan-Mar) for 2025-26. While H1 growth was flat at sub 1%, H2 posted growth of about 21.5% compared to previous H2," SIAM said.
A similar trend was observed in the passenger vehicle segment in the March quarter and FY26. Domestic wholesale sales in this segment hit a record high of 1.32 million units in the March quarter and 4.64 million units in FY26, up nearly 8% on year.
"H2 of 2025-26 posted a robust growth of 16.7% compared to 2024-25, whereas there was a (-)1.4?-growth in H1 in 2025-26, compared to previous H1," SIAM said, adding that there was an increase of over 80% on year in the registration of electric passenger vehicles in FY26.
Despatches of three-wheelers too hit a record high in the March quarter and FY26. Companies sold 226,571 three-wheelers to dealerships in India in Jan-Mar, up 27% on year, and 836,231 units in FY26, up 13% on year. Exports in Jan-Mar climbed 45% on year to 113,831 units and in FY26, they rose 50% on year to 460,567 units.
"The performance of the three-wheeler segment is driven by increased economic activity, rising movement of people and goods, strengthening personal and commercial mobility needs for meeting the transportation needs in urban and semi-urban areas," SIAM said. "Demand has been further aided by the expansion of electric autorickshaws, issuance of new permits for ICE (internal combustion engine) three-wheelers by select state governments..." it said.
Domestic wholesale sales of commercial vehicles grew 19% on year to 325,462 units in the March quarter and increased 13% to 1.08 million units in FY26. "The roll-out of GST 2.0 reforms has provided a strong impetus to domestic CV sales, with consumption demand driving new vehicle purchases by fleet operators," SIAM said. Cuts in repo rate by the Reserve Bank of India have significantly lowered the total cost of ownership, easing financing for consumers, SIAM said.
OUTLOOK
SIAM expects all automobile segments to grow in FY27, continuing the strong growth momentum seen in the second half of FY26.
"However, uncertainties arising from the West Asia conflict, particularly prices of crude oil and commodities, higher exchange rates and disruptions in shipping routes, remains a concern for the auto sector," SIAM said. "Stable geopolitical environment will help build confidence of the industry, which can, in turn, drive further growth in auto industry's performance in 2026-27," SIAM said.
