MUMBAI – The area sown under summer crops across India rose 1.2% on year to 6.4 million hectares as of Friday, according to agriculture ministry data. The area under rice, the largest summer crop by both acreage and production, was 3.06 million hectares, down 5.3% from 3.23 million hectares a year ago.
The area sown under coarse cereals rose 7.6% on year to 1.37 million hectares, the data showed. The acreage under maize, the leading summer coarse cereal in terms of area and production, rose 7.8% to 846,000 hectares from 785,000 hectares a year ago. The area under bajra was 460,000 hectares, up from 430,000 hectares at the same time last year.
The area under pulses was 1.15 million hectares, up 7.7% from 1.07 million hectares a year ago. Moong acreage rose almost 4% to 847,000 hectares, while urad increased nearly 17% on year to 278,000 hectares.
The total area sown under oilseeds rose 9% to 831,000 hectares, the data showed. The area under groundnut was 477,000 hectares, up 13.6% from 420,000 hectares a year ago. The acreage under sesame rose 3% to 309,000 hectares.
The normal acreage during the summer crop season, based on the average area covered in the last two years, is 7.54 million hectares. The summer crop season in India runs between the rabi and kharif seasons, typically spanning from March to June.
