--Govt source: Diesel, ATF export duty hike may fetch INR 30 bln fortnightly
By Sagar Sen
NEW DELHI – The government will get additional fortnightly revenue of around INR 30 billion from the hike in export duty on diesel and aviation turbine fuel that was announced on Saturday, a senior finance ministry official said. "In the last fortnightly review, we increased the export duty on diesel and aviation turbine fuel further, we will wait for another fortnight to evaluate the situation," the official told Informist.
On Saturday, the government hiked the windfall gains tax on the export of diesel to INR 55.5 per litre from INR 21.5 per litre and aviation turbine fuel to INR 42 per litre from INR 29.5 per litre. The hike in the duty on exports will help ensure domestic availability of the fuels.
On Mar. 26, the government had first imposed export duties on diesel and aviation turbine fuel due to the surge in crude oil prices following the war in West Asia. Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs Chairman Vivek Chaturvedi had said that the government would get about INR 15 billion every fortnight from the additional duty.
The government had also cut the excise duty on petrol and diesel by INR 10 per litre on Mar. 26. The government is expected to incur revenue loss of INR 70 billion fortnightly due to the cut.
Since the war in West Asia began on Feb. 28, India has been exposed to energy and price shocks, given the country's dependence on the Gulf region for crude oil, liquefied petroleum gas, and liquefied natural gas supplies. Crude oil prices have surged to as high as $120 per barrel from $70 per barrel before the war. End
