MUMBAI – US President Donald Trump Sunday said the US Navy would close off the Strait of Hormuz, after negotiators failed to reach a peace deal with Iran. Iranian negotiators met a delegation led by US Vice President J.D. Vance in Pakistan on Saturday for the first peace talks of the war in West Asia.
The US Central Command forces will begin implementing a blockade of all maritime traffic entering and exiting Iranian ports on Monday at 1930 IST, in accordance with the President's proclamation. "The blockade will be enforced impartially against vessels of all nations entering or departing Iranian ports and coastal areas, including all Iranian ports on the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman," US Central Command forces said in a press release Sunday.
After the negotiations in Islamabad concluded, Trump said in two separate posts on Truth Social that the discussions had lasted close to 20 hours and that most points had been agreed upon. However, he added that Iran was unwilling to give up on its nuclear ambitions – the only thing that matters.
"Effective immediately, the United States Navy, the Finest in the World, will begin the process of BLOCKADING any and all Ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz," he said.
He said the US navy has been instructed to seek and interdict every vessel in international waters that has paid a toll to Iran, adding that the country will also begin destroying the mines the Iranians laid in the Strait, through which a fifth of the world's crude oil passes.
"No one who pays an illegal toll will have safe passage on the high seas," Trump said. "We will also begin destroying the mines the Iranians laid in the Straits. Any Iranian who fires at us, or at peaceful vessels, will be BLOWN TO HELL!"
The talks over the weekend between the US and Iran came after the two countries announced a two-week ceasefire on Wednesday. After the talks, US Vice President J.D. Vance said, "The bad news is that we have not reached an agreement, and I think that's bad news for Iran much more than it's bad news for the United States of America," reports said.
Meanwhile, Iran's chief negotiator Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said, "Iran had very good initiatives to show goodwill in talks with the US which led to progress in the negotiations," as per media reports. However, he added that Trump's new threats will have no effect on the Iranian nation. "If you fight, we will fight, and if you come forward with logic, we will deal with logic. We will not bow to any threats, let them test our will once again so that we can teach them a bigger lesson," he said. End
