MUMBAI – The number of e-way bills generated in March rose 12.9% on year to an all-time high of 140.60 million, according to data from the Goods and Services Tax Network. Sequentially, e-way bill generation rose 6%, reflecting the pick-up in activity at the end of the financial year.
At 12.9%, the on-year growth in e-way bill generation was the lowest in five months. In the financial year ended Mar. 31, the number of e-way bills generated increased 19.5%, the highest in three years.
An e-way bill is a GST document for the transport of goods worth more than INR 50,000 within or outside a state. The number of e-way bills generated is considered a lead indicator of economic activity and domestic trade.
An increase in e-way bills generally suggests GST collections would be robust the following month, as most transactions will be reflected in the next month's collections. India's GST collections, excluding cess, grew 8.8% on year to INR 2 trillion in March. End
