MUMBAI – Temperature during the day is expected to rise above 35 degrees Celsius in Mumbai on Saturday and Sunday, private weather forecasting agency Skymet said. Hot and humid weather conditions are likely to persist during the period, though heatwave conditions are unlikely, the weather agency said.

The weather in Mumbai has remained moderately warm in April so far, with maximum temperatures staying in the range of 31-32 degrees Celsius, which is below normal, the weather agency said. The city records a monthly average temperature of 33 degrees Celsius during March, April, and May, and even on the hottest days, temperature remains below 40 degrees Celsius, the agency said. However, perpetually moist westerly winds from the sea increase the humidity level in the city, making weather conditions feel hotter than they are, the agency said.

A heatwave is declared in Mumbai when temperature breaches the 37 degrees Celsius mark, the weather agency said. Earlier in March, the city recorded two rounds of heatwave conditions, the agency said.

Day temperature in the city is dictated by the pattern of the sea breeze. Over the past two days, an unrestricted sea breeze over the city and its suburbs has kept the day temperature from climbing higher. This wind pattern is likely to get altered over the Konkan region in the next three to four days due to the presence of several weather systems.

A cyclonic circulation lying over Rajasthan is expected to arrest the free flow of westerly winds along the Konkan coast, the weather agency said. Another cyclonic circulation is likely to form over parts of central Maharashtra and Marathwada, while a north-south trough is expected to extend from this circulation across the interior of Maharashtra to Kerala. These weather systems are also expected to obstruct an early onset of the sea breeze, resulting in the day temperature rising above 35 degrees Celsius in Mumbai over the weekend, the agency said.  End
