NEW DELHI – Voting for Assembly constituencies in Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry concluded Thursday with high voter turnouts recorded in both the states and the Union Territory. As of 1800 IST, Assam registered a voter turnout of 85.04%, Kerala saw 77.38%, and Puducherry 89.08%.

The voter turnout figures may go up slightly in the final assessment, an Election Commission of India official said.

Both Assam and Kerala saw high-voltage election campaigns with the ruling parties – the Bharatiya Janata Party in Assam and the Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led coalition in Kerala – leaving no stone unturned to win a third consecutive term. The Indian National Congress, the principal opposition party in both states, is banking on its welfare promises and anti-incumbency to win the election.

Voting for 126 seats across 31,486 polling stations in Assam ended with no major incident. Kerala voted for 140 seats across 30,471 polling stations. In Puducherry, polling took place for 30 seats. The poll results will be declared May 4.  End
