Weather-Forecast-Heatwaves-unlikely-till-mid-Apr-temperatures-to-intensify-thereon-Skymet

Informist, Thursday, Apr. 9, 2026

MUMBAI – The presence of multiple active weather systems has kept temperatures normal to below normal across the country in April so far, private weather forecasting agency Skymet said. Typically, temperatures soar past 40 degrees Celsius in several parts of the country by April, the weather agency said. This year, heatwaves are unlikely till mid-April, after which a gradual warming to typical summer heat is expected, the agency said.

The formation of consecutive western disturbances, which moved across the northern mountains have kept many parts of northwest India cooler than usual, the weather agency said. The region recorded the highest amount of rainfall for the month from Apr. 2-8, which was 291?ove normal at 7 millimetres. This has caused temperatures to dip below 25 degrees Celsius in the region.

The remnants of these western disturbances moved across the eastern parts of the country, causing showers over perpetually rainfall-deficit states such as Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. With more rainfall likely in the next few days, heat is likely to remain surpassed over east India till mid-April, the weather agency said. Northeast India has also recorded excess rainfall across the valleys, mountains, and plains in the region in the month so far, the agency said.

The presence of several weather systems has also kept the rest of the country cooler than usual, the agency said. In central India, temperatures are expected to rise incrementally in the next few days. In west India, states such as Maharashtra and Gujarat are likely to record a rise in day temperatures in the next five days, though they will remain below normal, it said.

While most of south peninsular India has also been cooler than usual, parts of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have recorded spikes over 40 degrees Celsius in April so far. The peninsular trough and seasonal wind discontinuity will remain a regular feature, though day temperatures in some places could remain above normal, the weather agency said. However, these temperatures will not meet the heatwave criteria, the agency said.

Heatwaves are likely in pockets of the country in the second half of April, which is par for the course, the weather agency said. Saurashtra, Kutch, Vidarbha, Marathwada, Telangana, and the interior parts of Odisha are likely to see the first spikes in temperatures, it said.  End
