NEW DELHI – The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs on Wednesday approved investment in two hydroelectric projects in Arunachal Pradesh at a total investment of about INR 402 billion. The Cabinet panel approved an investment of INR 260.70 billion for the construction of the Kamala Hydro Electric Project in Kamle, Kra Daadi and Kurung Kumey Districts of Arunachal Pradesh. The committee also approved an investment of INR 141.06 billion for the construction of the Kalai-II Hydro Electric Project in Anjaw District of the state.

 

The Kamala Hydroelectric Project, with an installed capacity of 1,720 megawatts, is expected to generate 6.87 billion units of energy. In addition to contributing to the national grid, the project will help mitigate flooding in the Brahmaputra valley, an official release said.

 

The Kamala Hydro Electric Project, to be completed in 96 months, will be implemented through a joint venture between NHPC Ltd. and the Arunachal Pradesh government. The Centre will provide INR 47.44 billion as budgetary support for the flood moderation component and INR 13.40 billion for enabling infrastructure.

 

Apart from the Kamala Hydro Electric Project, three major hydropower projects — Subansiri Lower, Dibang Multipurpose, and Etalin — are being developed by NHPC in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, the release said.

 

The Kalai-II Hydroelectric Project will have an installed capacity of 1,200 megawatts and is expected to generate 4.85 billion units of energy annually. The project, to be completed in 78 months, will be implemented through a joint venture between THDC India Ltd. and the Arunachal Pradesh government.

 

The Centre will provide INR 6 billion in budgetary support for the construction of roads, bridges, and associated transmission lines, in addition to Central Financial Assistance of INR 7.50 billion towards the state's equity share.  End
