NEW DELHI – India welcomes the two-week ceasefire agreed to by the US and Iran and hopes it would lead to lasting peace in West Asia, Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson at the Ministry of External Affairs, said in a statement Wednesday. "As we have continuously advocated earlier, de-escalation, dialogue and diplomacy are essential to bring an early end to the ongoing conflict," he said in the statement, posted on microblogging platform X.
"The conflict has already caused immense suffering to people and disrupted global energy supply and trade networks. We expect that unimpeded freedom of navigation and global flow of commerce would prevail through the Strait of Hormuz," the statement said.
The US and Iran have agreed to a two-week ceasefire in order to negotiate a definitive agreement for peace in West Asia. The ceasefire was brokered by Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and top general Asim Munir, with negotiations to begin in Islamabad from Friday.
"We received a 10 point proposal from Iran, and believe it is a workable basis on which to negotiate," US President Donald Trump said on his social media platform Truth Social. "Almost all of the various points of past contention have been agreed to between the United States and Iran, but a two week period will allow the Agreement to be finalized and consummated."
The conflict in West Asia started after the US and Israel bombed Tehran and killed their Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khameini on Feb. 28. Since then, the threat of Iranian attack has effectively shut the Strait of Hormuz, disrupting the transit of around a fifth of the world's crude oil. End
