NEW DELHI - The Indian Sugar & Bio-energy Manufacturers Association has cut its estimate on gross sugar production in 2025-26 to 32.0 million from 32.4 million tonnes estimated earlier in February, ISMA Director General Deepak Ballani said. Sugar season runs from October to September, and gross sugar output is estimated before the diversion of sucrose or sugar for ethanol production.
"Sugarcane varietal issues in Uttar Pradesh and early closures of mills in Maharashtra have impacted sugar production," Ballani said on the sidelines of ISMA SugarNXT 2026 here on Tuesday.
Ballani expects mills to divert about 3.4 million tonnes of sucrose, or sugar equivalent, for ethanol production, resulting in a net sugar availability of 28.5 million tonnes in 2025-26. Last year, India's net sugar output was 26.1 million tonnes.
The 2025-26 sugar season opened with a carryover stock of 5.0 million tonnes, and mills across the country have produced 27.12 million tonnes as of the end of March. End
