IMD forecasts hailstorms, heavy rainfall over parts of east India till Wed

MUMBAI - Heavy rainfall is expected over parts of Gangetic West Bengal on Wednesday and over parts of Odisha till Wednesday under the influence of an upper air cyclonic circulation over Odisha and a trough running from the Gangetic West Bengal to the Gulf of Mannar, the India Meteorological Department said. Hailstorms are also likely over parts of Bihar on Wednesday and Jharkhand till Wednesday, the weather department said.
These weather systems are also likely to cause thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 60–70 km per hour and gusting to 80 km per hour over the Gangetic West Bengal on Wednesday, the weather bureau said. Thundersqualls with wind speeds reaching 50–60 km per hour and gusting to 70 km per hour are expected over parts of Bihar, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim on Wednesday and over Jharkhand till Wednesday, the bureau said. Light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are expected over several parts of east India in the next three to four days, the bureau said.
Currently, a western disturbance lies over northeast Pakistan and adjoining Afghanistan, with a trough running in the westerlies to the northwest of the country. An induced upper air cyclonic circulation lies over central Pakistan, while an upper air cyclonic circulation lies over northeast Rajasthan. An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over northwest Uttar Pradesh, while another such weather system lies over east Uttar Pradesh, the weather department said.
The combination of the above-mentioned weather systems is expected to cause hailstorms over parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, east Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand till Wednesday, and over east Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday, the department said. Light to moderate rainfall or snowfall is expected over most parts of northwest India till Friday, with a few spells of heavy showers over Himachal Pradesh on Wednesday.
An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over central Assam, and a trough runs in the westerlies to the northeast of the country, the weather bureau said. These weather systems are likely to cause heavy rainfall over parts of Arunachal Pradesh on Friday and Sunday and over Assam and Meghalaya on Thursday and Friday, the bureau said. A wet spell with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds is expected over multiple parts of northeast India till Monday, it said.
Light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds is likely over parts of Madhya Pradesh till Wednesday and over Chhattisgarh till Thursday, with a few spells of heavy rainfall in the same regions on Wednesday, the weather bureau said.
The trough running from Gangetic West Bengal to the Gulf of Mannar is expected to cause a wet spell accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over parts of south peninsular India till Saturday, the department said.
Hot and humid weather is likely over parts of Kerala till Thursday, over coastal Karnataka from Thursday to Saturday, and over parts of Gujarat from Saturday to Monday, the weather bureau said. An alert for hot and humid weather is issued when maximum temperatures remain 3 degrees Celsius above normal, along with above-normal relative humidity.
Day temperatures are likely to remain below-normal to near-normal over most parts of northwest, central, and east India in the next five days, after which they are expected to gradually rise above normal, the weather department said. End
