MUMBAI – Air India group Tuesday increased the fuel surcharge for domestic and international routes, citing a sharp increase in global jet fuel prices. The revised rates shall be effective Wednesday. For domestic routes, the airline moved from a flat fuel surcharge to a distance-based structure after the government capped the rise in aviation turbine fuel prices at 25%. On international routes, the airline has announced higher fuel surcharges in the absence of similar price mitigation for global aviation turbine fuel.
For domestic routes, the revised surcharge per passenger per sector has been set at INR 299 for flights up to 500 kilometre, INR 399 for 501 kilometre–1,000 kilometre, INR 549 for 1,001 kilometre–1,500 kilometre, INR 749 for 1,501 kilometre–2,000 kilometre, and INR 899 for more than 2,000 kilometre, effective 0901 IST Wednesday. This includes Air India Express flights.
According to data from the International Air Transport Association, global average jet fuel prices nearly doubled to $195.19 per barrel for the week ended Mar. 27 from $99.40 per barrel at the end of February. The revised surcharge has been set at $24 for South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation destinations excluding Bangladesh. Further, the revised surcharge has been set at $50 for West Asia, $100 for China and Southeast Asia excluding Singapore, $60 for Singapore, $130 for Africa, $205 for Europe including the UK, and $280 each for North America and Australia. The surcharge on Europe, North America and Australia routes will be effective Friday.
The revised surcharge on international routes does not fully offset the sharp increase in jet fuel prices and the airline continues to absorb part of the higher fuel cost, Air India said. End
