NEW DELHI – The area sown under summer crops across India rose nearly 1% on year to 5.83 million hectares as of Friday, according to agriculture ministry data. The area under rice, the largest summer crop, fell 7.6% on year to 3.01 million hectares as of Friday, but acreage under coarse cereals rose 8% on year to 1.16 million hectares. 

 

The normal acreage during the summer crop season is 7.54 million hectares, as per the average of the area covered in the last two years. Summer crops are cultivated in India between the rabi and kharif seasons, typically from March to June. 

 

As of Friday, the acreage under maize, the largest summer coarse cereal crop, was up 2.4% on year at 718,000 hectares. Other coarse cereals include jowar, bajra, ragi, and small millets.

 

The total area sown under pulses was up over 25% on year at 879,000 hectares. Acreage of moong rose 24% on year to 491,000 hectares and that of urad rose 25% to 242,000 hectares. 

 

The total area sown under oilseeds rose 4.3% on year to 774,000 hectares as of Friday, the data showed. The area under groundnut was up 9.3% on year at 459,000 hectares, but that under sesame was down 3.2% at 271,000 hectares.  End
