NEW DELHI – Share of petrol and diesel-run passenger vehicles moderated year-on-year in 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) as consumers preferred alternative fuel powertrain options, including compressed natural gas-run cars and electric cars. A similar trend was seen in sales of two-wheelers, commercial vehicles, and three-wheelers as well, with the share of alternative fuel variants picking up gradually according to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations.

Dealerships sold 4.71 million passenger vehicles in FY26, up 13% on year. Passenger vehicles form around 15% of all the automobiles sold in India by dealerships.

Petrol cars continued to rule the roost in FY26, forming 47.48% of the overall cars sold. However, this was lower than its share of 50.82% in FY25. The contribution of diesel powertrains moderated as well, albeit at a lower pace – 18.08% in FY26 compared to 18.23% in FY25.

Share of cars running on CNG increased to 21.98% in FY26 compared to 19.60% in FY25. Share of EVs deepened further as well, as their penetration increased to 4.25% in FY26, compared to 2.61% in FY25.

Three-wheelers' retail sales improved 12% on year to 1.36 million units in FY26. Electric vehicles' domination in this segment stengthened further in FY26, as nearly 61% of the three-wheelers sold in the country were fuelled by electricity, up from around 57% in FY25. Contribution of CNG to the fuel mix fell to 26.49% in FY26 from 30.67% in FY25.

Dealerships sold 1.06 million commercial vehicles in FY26, up almost 12% on year. Diesel retained its dominant position in FY26 at 82.37%, down only mildly from FY25. Petrol commercial vehicles too lost ground, with their contribution to total sales slipping to 3.95% in FY26 from 5.16% in FY25. The contribution of CNG engines to total commercial vehicle sales improved to 11.79% in FY26 from 11.15% in FY25, while that of electric vehicles rose to 1.83% in FY26, up around a percent from FY25.  End
