NEW DELHI – The Delhi High Court Monday asked India News not to air an episode that allegedly disparaged Britannia Industries Ltd.'s Marie Gold biscuit. The court directed the channel not to air the episode till the next date of hearing on Sept. 17. Justice Tushar Rao Gedela also asked YouTube to remove the content on Marie Gold biscuit from its platform. Observing that the court expects all news channels to report without any bias, Justice Gedela sought the reply of Information T.V. Pvt. Ltd., which manages India News, on Britannia Industries' plea.
Britannia Industries said India News, in its news episode, referred to Marie Gold biscuit as harmful for health. Further, the episode said Marie Gold biscuit contained refined flour and sugar that results in high blood pressure and heart diseases, said Britannia Industries. The news segment said that Britannia's Marie Gold biscuit was cheating diabetic patients.
The high court questioned the news channel whether it had carried out any independent test on the biscuits. People may have complaints but the news channel had to carry out independent analysis on the biscuits, said the court.
"You are not somebody on the road, you are a news entity," said the court. "You are saying you are an investigative journalist. You have not found out the truth. We are requesting you to stop," said the court. It said that the news channel had the responsibility to find out whether that ingredient in the biscuits was really harmful.
Information T.V. said that the news episode was on the basis of public views and it was not the view of the channel itself. Further, there were seven doctors who had also given the statements in favour of what the general public had perceived regarding Marie Gold biscuit. On this, the high court remarked that doctors saying something was not evidence and the news channel had to give an independent test report.
At 1344 IST, shares of Britannia Industries were up 1.2% at INR 5,510 on the National Stock Exchange. End
