MUMBAI – After falling over 2?ch in the first half of the session, benchmark equity indices recovered and ended the session with minor gains. Indices rose on the back of buying interest after correcting sharply recently, which made valuations "attractive", according to analysts. The Nifty 50 index settled at 22713.10 points, up 33.70 points or 0.2%. The BSE Sensex closed at 73319.55, up 185.23 points or 0.3%. However, the indices fell 2.6?ch on weekly basis, extending their losses for the sixth straight week.
The recovery was despite the continued rise in crude oil prices, which surged again after US President Donald Trump in a televised address early Thursday said the US would continue to attack Iran "extremely hard" over the next two to three weeks. "Not sure what exactly happened... market was too much oversold in the last few days. So probably that could have triggered some buying interest," Pravin Bokade, head of research at IDBI Capital Markets & Securities, said.
The rebound was driven by a combination of factors, most notably a sharp recovery in the rupee following the Reserve Bank of India's intervention, which helped stabilise sentiment, and strong buying in information technology stocks that acted as a defensive hedge given their dollar-linked earnings visibility, Hariprasad K., analyst and founder of Livelong Wealth, said. "From a market structure standpoint, the morning fall pushed the index into an oversold zone, triggering short covering and algorithmic buying, which accelerated the recovery."
All broader market indices ended in the red despite the recovery made in benchmark indices. After falling over 3?ch, broader indices came off lows, recovering almost all of their intraday losses and closed 0.2-0.5% lower. The India VIX closed higher after falling in the previous session, indicating increased nervousness in the market. The fear gauge settled over 2% higher at 25.5200
After witnessing a broad-based sell-off, sectoral indices ended on a mixed note with the Nifty IT index leading the gains. On the other hand, Nifty Consumer Durables, Nifty Pharma, and Nifty Healthcare were the worst hit, down 0.9?ch.
Shares of most pharmaceutical companies closed in the red after reports that President Trump is set to announce tariffs as soon as Thursday on drugmakers that have not struck deals guaranteeing low prices in the US. The Trump administration is preparing to impose 100% tariffs on certain medicines to reshore manufacturing, according to multiple news reports citing sources. Intraday, the Nifty Pharma index plunged to its lowest level in nearly 11 months to 21149.90 points.
Among individual stocks, shares of Ola Electric Mobility closed over 9% higher after the company cut the price of the Roadster X+ 9.1 kWh, as it ramped up production of 4680 Bharat Cell. The Roadster X+ 9.1 kWh will now be priced at INR 129,999, implying a cut of INR 60,000, the company said in an exchange filing.
Shares of Powerica And Amir Chand Jagdish Kumar (Exports) closed over 1% and 15% lower, respectively, after listing at a discount to their issue price. Shares of Sai Parenterals closed over 3% higher after listing at a 2% premium to its issue price.
On Thursday, major equity indices in Asia and Europe fell sharply as hopes of a resolution of the West Asia conflict faded after Trump vowed more strikes on Iran. Similarly, US stock futures also tumbled Thursday, with futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average falling over 500 points. The May futures of Brent crude soared nearly 8% to trade around $109 per barrel, at 1643 IST. The contract rose over $8 a barrel from the previous close.
"We will continue (strikes on Iran) until our objectives are fully achieved," Trump said. "We are going to hit them (Iran) extremely hard over the next two to three weeks. We are going to take them back to the stone ages. If during this period of time, no deal is made...we are going to hit every one of their (Iran's) electric generating plants very hard, and probably simultaneously."
Further, Trump also urged US allies who depend on oil from West Asia that transits through the Strait of Hormuz, which has been effectively shut since the war started, to step in to free up the disrupted shipments. He also called for countries to buy US oil instead. Meanwhile, shortly after Trump concluded his remarks early Thursday, in which he also claimed that Iran's military capabilities have been all-but crushed, the Israeli military said it detected Iranian missile launches, according to an Al Jazeera report.
