India adds 6.4 mln mobile users February, Airtel adds more than RJio

AHMEDABAD - Indian telecommunications operators net added 6.40 million mobile users in February, down from 6.70 million mobile users added in January, according to data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Wednesday. Bharti Airtel Ltd. added the highest number of users, followed by Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. and Vodafone Idea Ltd. The other two major players, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd., continued to lose subscribers.

 

Bharti Airtel net added 4.86 million mobile users in February, higher than 4.40 million users added in January. Reliance Jio net added 1.62 million mobile users in February compared to nearly 2.44 million net additions in January. Vodafone Idea expanded its mobile customer base by 21,927 in February. In January, the company had net lost 411,337 mobile users.

 

State-owned BSNL net lost 101,824 mobile users in February, compared to nearly 271,486 users it had added to its fold in January.

 

Overall mobile subscriber base in India increased to 1.27 billion users, up 0.7% from January-end. Reliance Jio had the highest subscriber base with more than 493 million mobile users as on Feb. 28. Bharti Airtel was a close second with nearly 473 million subscribers. Vodafone Idea had more than 198 million subscribers and BSNL had nearly 93 million users.

 

Private sector companies had 92.59% of the mobile users in India at the end of February, almost similar to the share in January and in December. Bharti Airtel gained market share from Reliance Jio and Vodafone in terms of mobile subscribers. Bharti Airtel's market share increased 19 basis points on month to 37.59%. Reliance Jio's share fell 7 bps to 39.22% and that of Vodafone Idea declined 9 bps to 15.78%.
