KOLKATA - Ashok Leyland Ltd. Wednesday said its total vehicle sales in March grew 5% on year to 25,381 units. Although light, medium and heavy commercial trucks registered sales growth during the month, medium and heavy commercial buses saw sales decline, thereby pulling down the company's overall sales growth.

 

In India, total vehicle sales rose 5% on year to 23,743 units in March. Sales of medium and heavy commercial trucks rose 10% on year to 14,138 units and sales of light commercial vehicles increased 17% to 7,505 units. However, sales of medium and heavy commercial buses declined 34% on year to 2,100 units, which effectively pulled down the overall domestic medium and heavy commercial vehicles sales growth to only 1% on year at 16,238 units.

 

Including exports, total sales of medium and commercial trucks rose 11% on year to 14,470 units in March, while bus sales fell 24% to 3,048 units in March. Light commercial vehicle sales increased 12% on year to 7,863 units.

 

In Apr-Mar, Ashok Leyland's total vehicle sales, including exports, rose 13% on year to 220,437 units. This includes sales of 142,658 medium and heavy commercial vehicles, up 13% on year, and 77,779 light commercial vehicles, up 13% on year. In India, the company sold a total of 202,355 commercial vehicles in the last financial year, up 13% on year.

 

For the December quarter, Ashok Leyland had reported a net profit of INR 7.96 billion on revenues of INR 115.34 billion. On Wednesday, shares of the company ended over 3.2% down at INR 149.11 on the National Stock Exchange. End
