NEW DELHI – The Centre has offered a one-time 30-day automatic extension to complete gems and jewellery shipment obligations under the foreign trade policy amid shipping disruptions in West Asia, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade said in a notification Monday.
The one-time relaxation applies to cases where export, re-export, and re-import periods expire on or between Mar.1 and May 31, the notification said. These shipment periods shall be automatically extended by 30 days from the date of expiry, it added.
Under the handbook of foreign trade policy, exports, re-exports of imported gems, and re-imports of items not sold abroad must be completed within deadlines varying from 60 days to 150 days.
The Strait of Hormuz, which is the major gateway for shipping cargoes to West Asia, has been disrupted ever since the US-Israel combine launched an attack on Iran on Feb. 28.
The notification also clarified that there is no requirement for a separate application, composition fee, amendment, or endorsement to avail the extension. In addition, customs authorities shall permit export-import, in accordance with the above provisions, subject to the necessary verification of relevant details, it added. End
