KOLKATA - The government Monday said Coal India Ltd.'s subsidiary Northern Coalfields Ltd. has achieved its annual production target of 140 million tonnes ahead of schedule in the current financial year.
With its 10 highly mechanised opencast mines, Northern Coalfields has consistently upheld its legacy of meeting annual coal production targets for a decade, demonstrating outstanding performance, according to a statement from the coal ministry.
However, the government's statement did not specify the status of production and whether production is as per plan for 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) in Coal India's other five coal producing subsidiaries.
Terming Northern Coalfields as the flagship subsidiary of Coal India, the government said the former has emerged as a key pillar in safeguarding India's energy security. Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd. and South Eastern Coalfields Ltd. are Coal India's two largest subsidiaries.
As on Feb. 28, Mahanadi Coalfields accounted for 29% of Coal India's total production in the current financial year, followed by South Eastern Coalfields accounting for 23% of the total output. Northern Coalfields accounted for 19% of Coal India's total production during Apr-Feb of the ongoing financial year.
During FY25, Mahanadi Coalfields produced 203 million tonnes of coal, South Eastern Coalfields produced 146.6 million tonnes, and Northern Coalfields produced 128.1 million tonnes of the fossil fuel.
For the quarter ended December, the company had reported a consolidated net profit of INR 71.57 billion on revenue of INR 349.24 billion. Monday, shares of Coal India closed over 1% higher at INR 450.45 apiece on the National Stock Exchange. End
