NEW DELHI – US President Donald Trump Monday threatened to blow up Iran's power plants, oil wells, Kharg Island, and even its water desalination plants--targets Trump said the US had avoided so far--if Tehran does not agree to a deal soon enough and open the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump said the US is in a "serious discussion" with a "new and more reasonable" regime in Tehran to end its military operations. Iran has imposed a soft blockade on the narrow waterway through which around a fifth of the world's energy supply passes ever since it came under attack from the US-Israel combine on Feb. 28.
"Great progress has been made but, if for any reason a deal is not shortly reached, which it probably will be, and if the Hormuz Strait is not immediately open for business," Trump wrote on social media, "we will conclude our lovely stay in Iran by blowing up and completely obliterating all of their electric generating plants, oil wells and Kharg Island (and possibly all desalinization plants!), which we have purposefully not yet touched."
He said that this will be retribution for "our many soldiers, and others, that Iran has butchered and killed over the old regime's 47 year reign of terror". Iran has in the past said that if its power plants or water desalination units are hit, it will retaliate in kind.
While Pakistan has been claiming it is going to host direct talks between the US and Iran to end the war, the latter Monday said there have been "no direct talks" with the US, and "only excessive and unreasonable demands passed through intermediaries".
Iran's consulate general in Mumbai said Pakistan's forums are its own affair and Iran does not participate in them. "US 'diplomacy' flips constantly; our stance is clear. Pakistan's forums are their own; we didn't participate. Regional calls to end war are welcome, but remember who started it!" the mission said in a statement. End
