NEW DELHI – The government has raised the April sugar sales quota for Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, and reduced it for Karnataka, according to a notification by the Department of Food and Public Distribution on Monday. The quota for Uttar Pradesh in April is 3.7% higher on month at 783,367 tonnes and for Maharashtra, it is up 0.6% on month at 816,908 tonnes. On other hand, the sales quota for Karnataka is 13.8% lower than the previous month at 330,283 tonnes, according to the release.

The Centre has set the all-India domestic sugar sales quota for April at 2.30 million tonnes, 2.1% lower than the 2.35 million tonnes in April 2025, but 2.2% higher than 2.25 million tonnes in March.

Market participants had expected the sales quota to be slightly higher at 2.30 million-2.35 million tonnes as demand for sugar is expected to rise with the progression of the summer season. Demand from bulk buyers such as cold-drink and ice-cream manufacturers is expected to increase as temperatures soar in April and May.

The government fixes the maximum quantity of sugar available for sale every month to support prices and help mills clear the arrears of sugarcane farmers. It also sets the monthly sales quota for each sugar mill.

The following table details the state-wise allocation of sugar sales limits for April, with the month-ago level, and the month-on-month change in percentage:
