AHMEDABAD - NTPC Ltd.'s board on Saturday approved an investment proposal to set up a battery energy storage system of 4.70 giga watts per hour capacity at an estimated cost of INR 58.22 billion, the state-run power major said in its filing with the stock exchanges. The move comes amid NTPC's focus on grid-scale storage and renewable integration.

In a separate decision, the board also cleared commitment to infuse an additional equity of INR 31.74 billion cash into Meja Urja Nigam Pvt. Ltd. by 2029-30. Meja Urja Nigam is NTPC's joint venture with Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd., for the development of 2,400 mega watt Meja Super Thermal Power Project Stage-II. The Meja Stage-II project, comprising three units of 800 MW each, is aimed at meeting the rising baseload power demand in Uttar Pradesh.

Following the latest board approval, NTPC's total equity commitment in the joint venture will increase to INR 50 billion. The company said the release of additional equity will be contingent upon receipt of proportionate contribution from Uttar Pradesh entity.

For the quarter ended December, NTPC had reported net profit of INR 49.87 billion on revenues of INR 406.44 billion. Friday, the company's shares ended trade 0.7% lower at INR 375.65 on the National Stock Exchange.  End
