NEW DELHI – Prime Minister Narendra Modi Friday held a meeting with chief ministers of states and lieutenant governors of Union territories to review preparedness for the emerging situation arising from the war in West Asia and its impact on India, the Prime Minister's Office said in a release. Modi urged states to accelerate efforts in the use of alternative energy sources such as biofuels, solar energy, electric mobility, and piped natural gas connections.
Modi also highlighted the importance of enhancing domestic exploration of oil and natural gas, with active cooperation from states. "Prime Minister highlighted that the situation remains dynamic, necessitating continuous monitoring and adaptive strategies," the release said. "He stressed that the government's priorities are to maintain economic and trade stability, ensure energy security, safeguard the interests of citizens, and strengthen industry and supply chains."
The chief ministers across states expressed confidence that the situation remains stable, with adequate availability of petrol, diesel, and liquefied petroleum gas. Modi urged states to ensure smooth functioning of supply chains and take strict measures against hoarding and profiteering, the release said. The prime minister also stressed on the need for advance planning in the agriculture sector, particularly in monitoring fertiliser storage and distribution.
The US-Israel war on Iran, which began on Feb. 28, has led to a spike in crude oil prices and also disrupted supply on oil and gas from Gulf nations. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow passageway, has disrupted the supply of gas to India from West Asia.
Modi underscored the importance of maintaining public confidence, noting that assurance regarding the availability of essential commodities would help prevent unnecessary panic among citizens, the release said. Modi called for a parallel focus on immediate response and long-term preparedness. End
