MUMBAI – The water level in 166 key reservoirs of the country was 85.432 billion cubic metres as of Friday, accounting for 46.5% of the total live storage capacity, data from the Central Water Commission showed. The water level was up 10.5% from a year ago and 21% above the average storage over the past 10 years, the data showed.

 

In the northern region, the water level in reservoirs was 8.845 billion cubic metres, which is 44.6% of the total live storage capacity. In the same period last year, the water level was 23.9% of the capacity. The northern region includes Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab.

 

In the eastern region, the water level in reservoirs was 10.349 billion cubic metres, which is 47.6% of the storage capacity, against 40.1% in the corresponding period last year. The eastern region includes Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, Tripura, Nagaland, West Bengal, and Bihar.

 

The water level in the western region was 22.863 billion cubic metres, accounting for 60% of the storage capacity, as against about 51.4% last year. The western region includes Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa.

 

In the central region, which includes Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Chhattisgarh, the water level in reservoirs was 22.256 billion cubic metres as of Friday. This is 45.8% of the total live storage capacity, compared with 46.8% a year ago. The water level in the southern region was 21.119 billion cubic metres, 38.2% of the storage capacity, compared with 38.9% a year ago.  End
