NEW DELHI – The Centre Friday bumped up allocation of liquefied petroleum gas by an additional 20%, bringing the allocation for the segment to 70% of the pre-West Asia crisis level for packed non-domestic LPG in states and Union territories. Additional allocation will be made to labour-intensive industries such as steel, automobiles, textiles, dye, chemicals, and plastics, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said in an order.
"Among these (sectors), priority shall be given to process industries or those requiring LPG for specialised heating purposes that cannot be substituted by natural gas," the ministry said in the order. The government had curtailed supplies to commercial outlets after the military conflict in West Asia put a large part of the global energy supply in flux. Preference was given to households that use LPG to keep their kitchen stoves running. India imports around 60% of its LPG requirements, most of it flowing through the Strait of Hormuz.
"When rest of the world has been taking drastic fuel conservation measures such as odd-even, 4-day work weeks, school and office closures and increasing fuel prices by 20-30%, India under PM Narendra Modi Ji remains an oasis of energy security, availability and affordability," Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri said in a social media post.
