NEW DELHI – Five more India-flagged ships may soon pass through the Strait of Hormuz, the government told opposition leaders at an all-party meeting convened to discuss the geopolitical crisis in West Asia. The government also said domestic liquefied petroleum gas production has been scaled up to cover 60% of consumption, against 28% on Feb. 28 when the military conflict erupted in the region, an opposition leader who attended the meeting said.
Some opposition leaders asked whether the government was using "silence as statecraft". They raised the issue of India's silence on the assassination of Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, by Israel and the US in an aerial attack on Feb. 28, and on the sinking of Iranian frigate IRIS Dena in the Indian Ocean on Mar. 4 when it was returning from an event hosted by the Indian Navy.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar told the meeting that India is speaking continuously with all stakeholders and posting about the steps it is taking to deal with the situation.
Some opposition leaders also expressed concern about Pakistan's attempt to play the role of a mediator between the US and Iran, and questioned whether the Narendra Modi government had relinquished that space for Islamabad through its flawed diplomatic manoeuvres. Jaishankar said Pakistan acting as a mediator between Iran and the US is "not new" and that it has been "doing this since 1981".
On US President Donald Trump's call to Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday, Jaishankar said Modi told Trump the war was hurting everyone and should be stopped. On his own interaction with his Iranian counterpart Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Jaishankar said Iran is "happy" with India's stand on the war. He underlined that India has good relations with all the countries involved in the conflict. While the US is India's largest trading partner, Israel is a technology supplier and also helped India during the brief conflict with Pakistan in May.
The government also claimed that the demand of domestic LPG consumers is being met fully. If there is a delay of more than five days in the delivery of a household LPG cylinder, the consumer concerned should lodge a formal complaint, he said.
Earlier, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri gave a presentation on the war situation and how it is affecting some key maritime routes. The meeting, convened at the Parliament House complex, was chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and attended by top ministers, including Home Minister Amit Shah, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Chemicals & Fertilisers Minister J.P. Nadda, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju.
From the opposition camp, Mukul Wasnik and Tariq Anwar of the Indian National Congress, Supriya Sule of the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar), Arvind Sawant of the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), John Brittas of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Sanjay Singh of the Aam Aadmi Party, and Asaduddin Owaisi of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen attended the meeting.
