NEW DELHI – The Cabinet has approved India's Nationally Determined Contribution under the Paris Agreement for 2031-35, an official release said Wednesday. These are country-specific climate action plans mandated under the Paris Agreement of 2015, which outlines how each nation intends to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and take measures to adapt to climate change.
India had submitted its Nationally Determined Contribution for 2021-2030 in October 2015. As part of its latest targets, India aims to achieve 47% reduction in emissions intensity of its gross domestic product by 2035 compared to 2005 levels. Emissions intensity measures the amount of greenhouse gas released per unit of activity or output, helping to assess a country's carbon efficiency.
India targets achieving 60% of its cumulative installed electricity capacity from non-fossil sources by 2035. Further, the country aims to create 3.5 billion-4.0 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide-equivalent carbon sink. Enhancing the carbon sink helps to increase the planet's ability to soak up and store carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
Between 2031 and 2035, India aims to build resilient infrastructure which can help adapt to climate change in various sectors such as agriculture, water resources, health, disaster management, and fragile ecosystems. Further, India aims to mobilise domestic and new and additional finance from developed countries. End
