NEW DELHI – Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday said he received a call from US President Donald Trump and had a "useful exchange of views" on the situation in West Asia. Modi reiterated India's support for de-escalation of the conflict in the region and reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
"Ensuring that the Strait of Hormuz remains open, secure and accessible is essential for the whole world. We agreed to stay in touch regarding efforts towards peace and stability," Modi said in a post on social media platform X.
The US has been trying to rally the support of other countries to push Iran to lift its blockade of the strait through which over 20% of the world's crude oil and gas passes. Iran has enforced a soft blockade of the narrow waterway after it was attacked by the US-Israeli combine on Feb. 28.
While several European countries and Japan issued a joint statement expressing "readiness to contribute to appropriate efforts to ensure safe passage" through the Strait of Hormuz, none has committed to join military action to open the waterway.
Speaking in Parliament Tuesday, Modi said India is in touch with Iran, Israel, and the US, apart from other countries in the Persian Gulf region, to de-escalate the situation. He said New Delhi has advocated dialogue to restore peace. End
