NEW DELHI – US President Donald Trump spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday on the ongoing military conflict in West Asia, and the two leaders discussed the need to keep the Strait of Hormuz open. "President Donald Trump just spoke with Prime Minister Modi. They discussed the ongoing situation in the Middle East (West Asia), including the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open," US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor posted on the social media platform X.

A military conflict is raging in West Asia after the US-Israeli combine attacked Iran on Feb. 28, killing the latter's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran's retaliatory attacks on Israel and Gulf Cooperation Council member countries and its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz have severely affected the production and supply of crude oil and gas. Over 20% of the world's oil and gas passes through the Strait of Hormuz. The price of crude and gas has spiked since the war began.

Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, Modi said India is in touch with Iran, Israel, and the US, apart from the other countries in the Persian Gulf region, to de-escalate the situation. He said New Delhi has advocated dialogue to restore peace in the region.

Modi said India should brace for the long-lasting effects of the hostilities. Modi said the government is trying its best to mitigate the impacts, but the crisis is "going to test India's economic resilience".  End
