NEW DELHI – Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security on Sunday to review the situation in West Asia, and the measures to mitigate the impact of the military conflict on India's economy.
The cabinet secretary gave a detailed presentation on the global situation and shared the steps being planned by various ministries and departments to minimise the impact on agriculture, food security, petroleum, power, micro, small, and medium enterprises, exporters, shipping, trade, finance, and supply chains. The Cabinet Committee on Security has the ministers of home, defence, finance, and external affairs, besides the national security advisor, as its members.
"The prime minister has directed that a group of ministers and secretaries be formed to work dedicatedly in a whole of government approach," the government said in a release, adding that the prime minister also instructed sectoral groups to work in consultation with all stakeholders.
The impact of the conflict on farmers and their requirement for fertiliser for the kharif season was also assessed. "The measures taken in the last few years to maintain adequate stocks of fertilisers will ensure timely availability and food security," the release said. "Alternate sources of fertilisers were also discussed to ensure continued availability in the future."
Amid the raging military conflict between Iran and the US-Israel combine, India's energy supply has been hit, especially due to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran. The war has sent crude and gas prices soaring, and India is already facing a shortage of cooking gas.
At the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security, several measures were discussed to diversify sources of imports required by chemicals, pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals and other industrial sectors, the release said, adding that new export destinations to promote Indian goods would be developed in the near future.
It was decided that adequate supply of coal would be ensured to all power plants so that there is no shortage of electricity in India.
Several measures proposed by different ministries would be prepared and implemented in the coming days after consultation with all stakeholders, it said. "The prime minister also asked for proper coordination with state governments to ensure that there is no black-marketing and hoarding of important commodities," the release said. End
