NEW DELHI – Power distribution companies in India are currently not in a position to make investment towards vehicle-to-grid technology, Hindustan Power Exchange Managing Director Harish Saran said in a panel discussion at the Bharat Electricity Summit Friday.

"Vehicle-to-grid needs lot of investment from the discoms...most of the discoms are not in a position to invest so much," Saran said, adding that the required investment will come from other sources once there are regulations in place and power exchange systems will be designed.

While power distribution companies have seen a significant reduction in their outstanding dues to power generators, the overall financial health of the sector remains strained, with substantial cumulative debt still remaining to be repaid.

Vehicle-to-grid technology allows electric vehicles to send stored electricity from their batteries back to the power grid through bi-directional charging. This turns EVs into mobile energy storage units, which can help stabilise power grids and allow owners to profit by selling energy during peak demand.

Saran advocated for regulated entry of the EV industry on power exchanges and said that customers must ultimately benefit from fluctuating prices on the exchanges.   End
