NEW DELHI – India is seeing demand for green hydrogen derivatives, including methanol, from various countries and is ramping up production to cater to it, National Green Hydrogen Mission Director Abhay Bakre said on Friday. There is demand from Germany, Japan, Singapore, Korea, and the European Union, among others, Bakre told Informist on the sidelines of Bharat Electricity Summit here.
According to Bakre, many shipping companies from these countries have shown keen interest in India's green methanol. Demand for green methanol is seen at about 30 million tonnes annually by 2030, and India is currently producing 1 million tonnes per year. "We want to scale up production and reach up to 7 million tonnes per year by 2028-29," he said.
There is a global urgency to decarbonise fuel, which has led to a surge in interest towards green fuels – those derived from
renewable energy sources and capable of replacing fossil-based alternatives. Among these green fuels, green methanol is a key item due to its scalability and compatibility with existing infrastructure. It can be produced from feedstock like coal, biomass or natural gas and is used across sectors such as shipping, aviation, and chemicals.
The government's push for green methanol is part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, approved by the Union Cabinet in January 2023 with an outlay of INR 197.44 billion. The mission aims to make India a global hub of green hydrogen production, utilisation, and export.
According to Bakre, two-thirds of the funds allocated for the mission have been earmarked for development already, and the government has the remaining one-third, translating to INR 65.80 billion, to invest in further green hydrogen derivatives.
The NITI Aayog has also launched a 'Methanol Economy' initiative to position India as an export hub for the green fuel. "Methanol Economy programme is aimed at reducing India's oil import bill, greenhouse gas emissions, and converting coal reserves and municipal solid waste into methanol," India's top policy advisory panel has said.
