India adds 6.7 mln mobile users in Jan, Airtel adds more than RJio

MUMBAI – Indian telecommunications operators net added 6.70 million mobile users in January, down from 7.24 million mobile users added in December, according to data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India Thursday. Bharti Airtel Ltd. added the highest number of users, followed by Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. The other two players Vodafone Idea Ltd. and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd. continued to lose subscribers.
Bharti Airtel net added 4.41 million mobile users in January, lower than 5.43 million users added in December. Reliance Jio net added 2.44 million mobile users in January compared with nearly 3.00 million net additions in December.
State-owned BSNL expanded its mobile customer base by 271,486 in January. In December, the company had net lost 206,797 mobile users. Vodafone Idea net lost more than 411,000 mobile users in January, compared to nearly 941,000 users lost in December.
Overall mobile subscriber base in India increased to 1.25 billion users, up 0.5% from December-end. Reliance Jio had the highest subscriber base with more than 491 million mobile users as on Jan. 31. Bharti Airtel was a close second with nearly 468 million subscribers. Vodafone Idea had more than 198 million subscribers and BSNL had over 93 million users.
Private sector companies had 92.54% of the mobile users in India at the end of January, similar to the share in December. Bharti Airtel gained market share from Reliance Jio and Vodafone in terms of mobile subscribers. Bharti Airtel's market share increased 16 basis points on month to 37.40%. Reliance Jio's share fell 2 bps to 39.29% and that of Vodafone Idea declined 12 bps to 15.86%.
