NEW DELHI – India Thursday denounced attacks on energy infrastructure by countries involved in the military conflict in West Asia, calling it "unacceptable". The statement came hours after Iran fired missiles at oil and gas facilities across Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, in retaliation to Israel's attack on the South Pars gas field of Iran.

"India had previously called for the avoidance of targeting civilian infrastructure, including energy infrastructure, across the region," the statement said. The recent attacks against energy installations "in different locations" across West Asia are "deeply disturbing" and will only further destabilise an already uncertain energy scenario for the whole world, the statement read.

Iran Thursday hit Qatar's Ras Laffan energy complex, causing "extensive damage", as per media reports. The attacks led to a spike in energy prices.

"Such attacks are unacceptable and need to cease," India said. However, in response to a media query, Ministry of External Affairs spokesman Randhir Jaiswal desisted from naming any country. India has so far not condemned attacks on Iran by the US-Israel combine even as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in separate telephone calls to the leaders of Gulf Cooperation Council countries, criticised retaliatory attacks by Iran on those countries.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump hinted that the US did not condone Israel's attack on energy facilities. In a social media post, Trump said the US "knew nothing" about this particular attack, and highlighted in capital letters that "no more attacks will be made by Israel" on the "extremely important and valuable South Pars field" unless Tehran attacks "a very innocent" Qatar.

Trump said that in case of further attacks by Iran, the US will "massively blow up the entirety of the South Pars gas field". End
