--Govt official: March exports may not be much less than March 2025
NEW DELHI – India's goods exports in March may have been hit by the US-Israel war on Iran, but outbound shipments may not be less than in March 2025, a senior government official Thursday said on condition of anonymity. India exported goods worth $42 billion in March 2025.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal Tuesday had told the Lok Sabha that India's exports dipped in the first week of March owing to the conflict in West Asia and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway that connects the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean. However, exports picked up pace in the second week of March and, by the end of the month, the government hopes to maintain the momentum, Goyal had said in the Lower House.
In February, India's goods exports were down slightly from a year ago at $36.61 billion while imports jumped over 24% on year to $63.71 billion. As a result, the trade deficit widened to $27.10 billion from $14.42 billion a year ago.
India's merchandise exports during the first 11 months of the financial year 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) rose 1.8% on year to $402.93 billion despite the US imposing 50% tariff for several months. India imported goods worth $713.53 billion in Apr-Feb, up 8.5% on year. The trade deficit in the period widened to $310.60 billion from $261.80 billion a year ago. End
