Govt says enough coal in ecosystem to meet demand, cites high coal stocks

KOLKATA – Coal continues to ensure reliable baseload power to support core industries such as steel and cement, and coal production continues at a pace that matches the prevailing demands of the consumer, the government said in a statement Thursday. Moreover, coal producers are building adequate coal stocks at the pitheads to maintain adequate supplies to consumers, it said.
Pithead coal stock at Coal India Ltd.'s mines has risen to 125.5 million tonnes as on Mar. 18 from 106.8 million tonnes as at the start of the current financial year, the government said.
Singareni Collieries Co. Ltd. has around 5.8 million tonnes of pithead stocks and captive miners have about 15.8 million tonnes of idling stocks. Around 12 million tonnes of the fossil fuel is in transit and around 5.5 million tonnes is in ports and good-shed sidings, the government said. Power plants have 53.4 million tonnes of stock which is enough to generate power for 23 days.
State-owned Coal India is taking adequate measures to ensure supply of coal to all consumers including small, medium and other consumers, the government said, adding that the Maharatna company has planned 29 e-auctions in March, offering about 23.6 million tonnes of coal. Of this, five auctions have already been conducted wherein 7.3 million tonnes of coal was offered and 3.2 million tonnes of coal was booked in the auctions.
Coal India is also taking necessary steps to ensure coal availability to the small, medium, and other consumers through the State Nominated Agencies route and requested state governments to provide the additional coal requirement, which can be met in full to avoid any energy shortages, the government said.
