NEW DELHI – The Grain Ethanol Manufacturers Association has urged the Indian government to consider introducing ethanol-based cookstoves as a complementary clean cooking solution in the country, in a letter addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In the letter issued Monday, the industry body said ethanol cookstoves could be explored as an additional option alongside LPG for households and commercial establishments such as restaurants and street vendors.
The association noted that while India has significantly expanded access to clean cooking fuel through the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, the country still relies heavily on imported LPG to meet its cooking fuel demand.
The association said ethanol-based cookstoves could help diversify India's cooking energy mix and improve energy security by utilising domestically produced biofuel. Ethanol is a clean-burning fuel that can reduce indoor air pollution and support the country's biofuel ecosystem developed under the National Policy on Biofuels and the Ethanol Blended Petrol Program.
The association requested the government to initiate a study or pilot programme involving ministries, oil marketing companies and technical institutions to examine the feasibility, safety standards and economic viability of ethanol-based cooking solutions in India.
If found viable, ethanol cookstoves could emerge as an additional clean energy option while supporting rural incomes, sustainable energy goals and domestic biofuel utilisation, the association said. End
