NEW DELHI – The Competition Commission of India is preparing a plan to address anti-competitive practices related to Artificial Intelligence, Chairperson Ravneet Kaur said Monday. The CCI has also undertaken a market study to identify the potential anti-competitive practices in the AI space.
"We have identified potential anti-competitive conduct, which could be concentration on AI value chain, algorithmic collusion, price discrimination, or any opaqueness in the AI applications," Kaur said at 11th National Conference on Economics of Competition Law in New Delhi. In a market study published in October, the CCI had suggested that companies should conduct self-audit of their artificial intelligence systems to reduce the risk of AI-driven unfair business practices.
"Self-audit by the stakeholders, as to how they can ensure that at any stage of deployment of AI applications, there aren't any hidden anti-competitive outcomes," Kaur said. "These maybe happening sometimes knowingly and sometimes unknowingly."
Besides the AI space, CCI is also conducting a market study on the renewable energy sector under the framework of BRICS nations to identify potential competition-related concerns within the industry, Kaur said. "We are getting inputs from all BRICS nations. And we will leverage those insights to look at competition issues in the renewable energy market in India," the chairperson added.
As part of its continued focus on maintaining fair competition in markets, the anti-trust regulator is currently examining matters in sports, civil aviation, paints and varnishes and the liquor sectors, Kaur said. According to the chairperson, CCI resolved the vast majority of anti-trust matters it received in the current financial year. "Out of 1,360 anti-trust cases that have come to us, 1,290 have already been decided," she said. End
